From the box office: Oct. 11-13
This weekend at the box office saw second-week holdover “Gravity” staying at number one, “Captain Phillips” open to solid numbers and newcomer “Machete Kills” bomb.
In its second week, “Gravity” maintained its position at the top with an impressive $43.1 million. Strong word-of-mouth has helped this film tremendously, as people who may have otherwise waited to watch it at home have gone out to the theaters to experience the movie on the big screen in 3-D or IMAX.
Despite only being in its second week, “Gravity” has already surpassed the $100 million mark. And at its current rate, it should cross the $150 million mark by next weekend and hopefully reach $200 million by Halloween. The film should continue its momentum and profitability up until early November, when it will most likely lose IMAX and 3-D screens to “Ender’s Game” and “Thor: The Dark World.” Regardless, one thing is clear: “Gravity” has become the must-see film of the season.
Taking the second spot was Sony Pictures’ new release, “Captain Phillips,” which opened with a robust $25.7 million. The opening is good news for Sony, which had a rough summer at the box office after a series of high-profile flops. The debut is also good news for star Tom Hanks, who is coming off a series of box office disappointments like “Cloud Atlas,” “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” and “Larry Crowne.” In fact, “Captain Phillips” is Tom Hanks’ biggest opening in nearly five years.
Sony’s marketing team created an effective campaign that showcased the film as a suspenseful, high-stakes movie with plenty of thrills. Though “adult drama” films typically do not do this well at the box office, positive reviews and Oscar buzz for Tom Hanks led to the strong debut of this $55 million-budget true story.
The other new film in the top 10 was “Machete Kills,” which bombed with just $3.84 million. The film is the sequel to 2010’s “Machete,” which opened with $14.1 million and went on to gross more than $44 million worldwide. Despite having three years of a cult following, higher ticket prices and a star-filled cast (Danny Trejo, Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Charlie Sheen, Antonio Banderas, Lady Gaga), “Machete Kills” could not even gross one third of the amount that the original did.
The film had one of the worst openings ever for a movie in more than 2,500 locations, not to mention one of the worst openings of 2013. Though the budget for the film was $20 million, distributor Open Road Films bought it for only $2 million, so despite its terrible opening, the film should break even somewhere down the line.
