Homan: Best Dressed of the 2016 Golden Globes

The 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards honors the best in film and television. But more important than the actual awards ceremony was the hour-long Golden Globes Arrivals Special that was broadcast before the awards to showcase celebrities on the red carpet. Although “the winner of ‘Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television’” certainly sounds interesting (and long), I’m much more interested in Best Dressed. Here are my fashionable nominees for the Best of the Red Carpet:

Best Use of Color: Jaimie Alexander
Celebrities often shy away from color at award shows to avoid clashing with the bright red carpet and the busyness accompanied with it. However, “Blindspot” star Jaimie Alexander looked amazing in her black and emerald Genny dress. The shimmering green hue was unique and elegant, complementing the carpet perfectly.

Trendiest Dress: Jennifer Lawrence
It can be difficult to embrace high fashion on the red carpet, which is typically dominated by gowns that would be considered stylish yet classic. Jennifer Lawrence managed to keep the classiness while still being trendy with her custom made Dior gown. The dress featured side cutouts, and her choker necklace added to the modern feel of the look. While the red color screamed Old Hollywood glamour, the cool cutouts made Lawrence one of the best dressed of the evening.

Best Use of Sequin: Jane Wu
Though sometimes an overload of sequins makes a dress look tacky or ridiculous, neither was the case for actress Jane Wu. Her body-skimming silver sequin dress resembled armor rather than a glitzy pageant dress. With a bold middle part and low ponytail, her hair enhanced the strong look.

Most Glamorous: Jenna Dewan Tatum
Jenna Dewan Tatum resembled a night sky in her midnight blue, silver-sequined Zuhair Murad gown. She went for full-on glamour with a plunging neckline and vast A-line skirt. With a stunning dress and husband Channing Tatum on her arm, it is safe to say that all eyes were on her when she stepped onto the carpet.

Best Red Dress: Zendaya
Red carpet, red dresses. Everywhere. Among the sea of crimson, scarlet, ruby and rose, Zendaya’s tiered berry Marchesa gown was the perfect combination of girly and sophisticated. The ensemble also resembled everybody’s favorite red-dressed dancing girl emoji, which certainly doesn’t hurt.

Best Dressed Man: Mark Ruffalo
It’s hard for men to stand out since nearly all of them wear black tuxedos — a classic look that shows respect for the award show. Because men tend to dress the same, everything comes down to fit and details. Mark Ruffalo’s tux looked good on him, but his cool, smart glasses really made him look sharp.
