How often it snows in April

Snow in April is not unusual in Syracuse.

When students woke up this morning, a look out the window most likely showed a fresh coating of snow and wind gusts blowing flakes through the air.

This snowfall comes after an abnormally warm March. The average temperature was 6 degrees above normal and the average snowfall was 12.6 inches below normal, according to Syracuse.com

Snow in April is normal for Syracuse, though. The average snow accumulation for the month is 3.8 inches, according to The National Weather Service.

The record for snowfall on April 3rd is 2.5 inches, which was set in 1937.

Here is a breakdown of how much snow has accumulated in Syracuse during the month of April in the last 10 years, according to data from the weather service:



2015: 0.6 inches

2014: 0.4 inches

2013: 12 inches

2012: 0 inches

2011: 0.4 inches

2010: 0 inches

2009: 0.7 inches

2008: 0 inches

2007: 10.7 inches

2006: 0 inches

This winter, Syracuse has seen 72.2 inches of snowfall, about 44.8 inches below average, according to Syracuse.com.

The National Weather Service has called for another one to three inches of snow to fall in Onondaga County through Monday night.

A wind advisory is also in effect for Syracuse and much of central New York until 2 p.m. Sunday. Some gusts may reach up to 45 mph, according to the weather service.
