Just under four months after former head coach Scott Shafer was hired as the defensive coordinator at Maryland, he has stepped down due to personal reasons.
“I want to thank DJ Durkin for the opportunity to be on his staff, but at this time I feel it’s best to step aside to tend to personal matters,” said Shafer in a release. “I’m sincerely appreciative of his support and friendship.”
Shafer was let go by Syracuse director of athletics Mark Coyle in late November of 2015 and was hired by Durkin on Dec. 9. At SU, Shafer compiled a record of 14-23 as SU’s head coach. He was hired to replace Doug Marrone at the end of the 2012 season after the Orange won its second Pinstripe Bowl in three years.
After Shafer’s first season, which SU finished 7-6 and won the Texas Bowl, the Orange won just seven games in the next two seasons. Before being Syracuse’s head coach, Shafer served four years as the school’s defensive coordinator.
“I, along with the entire Maryland football family, will continue to support Scott in every way that we can,” Durkin said in the release.
