Get to know English electronic duo AlunaGeorge before they perform at University Union’s Block Party on April 28.
1. They had a concert in Minecraft
Yes, within the pixelated universe so many gamers love was an AlunaGeorge performance, the first musical performance in the Minecraft world. The concert was held in 2016 as part of Norway’s yearly tech conference “The Gathering” and then recreated virtually.
2. Gotta do what you gotta do
While Reid was guitarist in the indie-math rock band Colour, Francis was working as a tiler for a friend.
3. All up in her space
In 2009, Reid was cruising through the then popular MySpace when he came across Reid and her vocals. He sent her a message, remixed Francis’ band My Toys Like Me’s track “Sweetheart,” and the two have worked together since.
4. Slow and steady wins the race
After only having a few singles out, AlunaGeorge was nominated for the 2013 BRITs Critics’ Choice award and they finished second in the BBC’s Sound of 2013 poll — not too shabby for not even having an album out at the time.
5. When in doubt dance it out
Their music falls under the category of electronic using techniques found in R&B and futuristic pop. Francis provides the vocals, described as “almost childlike” by Edge magazine. Reid’s production uses bass, garage and dubstep.
