Chiara Gutsche (No. 74), pictured against Albany, scored twice at Stanford on Saturday night.

In its first overtime of the season, No. 11 Syracuse (3-0) defeated No. 15 Stanford (0-3), 2-1, in Stanford, CA on Saturday night.

Stanford’s Emma Alderton scored the first goal of the game, getting the ball past SU goalie Borg van der Velde within the first 10 minutes of the game. It would be Stanford’s only score.

It wasn’t until the second half that Syracuse was able to respond, via a goal from Chiara Gutsche. She was assisted by Laura Graziosi. Gutsche later capitalized on a scoring opportunity in overtime, scoring the game winning goal.

Gutsche attempted a game high seven shots, five of which were on goal. As a team, the Orange had 15 shots against the Cardinal, and nine of them were on goal. Stanford, on the other hand, had eight shots the entire game, all of which came in the first half. Van der Velde saved four of Stanford’s shots.

There were no penalty corners on either side of the ball. Stanford was awarded a penalty stroke in the second half. Had there been a goal, SU would have been down 2-1 with a dwindling chance at going into overtime.

The Orange are now 9-0 against Stanford. They will start ACC play on Friday against Virginia.
