Syracuse University announced in a Dec. 8 news release that it would convert 727 S. Crouse Ave., formerly known as The Marshall, into second-year housing. The announcement came a month after SU revealed it would do the same to the Sheraton Syracuse University Hotel & Conference Center.

On Jan. 12, SU’s Department of African American Studies was told it would operate without a chair for the duration of the semester, leaving many concerned about AAS’ future. At the closing of the semester, on May 1, James Haywood Rolling Jr. was named interim chair of the department, with “no previous knowledge” to faculty.

Schoolyard Bagels took Marshall Street by storm on February 8 as Syracuse community members waited in line to try the new bagel spot. About 48 hours later, the shop announced a temporary closure. Schoolyard has since reopened.

SU announced on April 15 that it would rename the David B. Falk College of Sport and Human Dynamics, removing “Human Dynamics” from the school’s title. The decision left members of the human dynamics departments uncertain of their programs’ standings within the school.

Bruce Springsteen postponed his tour to 2024 on Sept. 6, a day before he was set to perform in the JMA Wireless Dome. He performed in Syracuse for the first time since 1992 on the rescheduled date, April 18.
