Five Syracuse players were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Mideast Region All-Regional First and Second Teams, the NFHCA announced Wednesday. Bo van Kempen, Berber Bakermans and Willemijn Boogert represented SU on the First Team, while Bo Madden and Lieke Leeggangers were selected for the Second Team.
During Syracuse’s strong run to the NCAA Tournament, van Kempen was its primary source of offense. The defender led the Orange with 33 points on 15 goals, which ranked second in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Penalty corners quickly became van Kempen’s specialty for Syracuse, scoring 13 of her 15 goals on PC attempts. Van Kempen also ended the season with an ACC-high nine game-winners. On the defensive side, van Kempen tallied eight defensive saves, first on SU’s team and second in the ACC.
Bakermans, another graduate student, brought a much-needed veteran presence to a young Syracuse team. She earned All-Region honors for a third consecutive year, notching Mid-Atlantic honors with Delaware in the previous two seasons. Bakermans scored one goal, was second on Syracuse’s roster in assists with seven and ranked tied-fourth in points with nine.
Boogert rounded out the First Team honors for SU. She was the only Syracuse player named on the All-ACC Preseason Team. Following the season, she was honored alongside van Kempen on the All-ACC teams. The selection for the regional team was Boogert’s second straight. She ranked second on SU with 23 points and seven goals while notching a team-high nine assists. Boogert was also a primary insert for the Orange, starting eight penalty corner attempts that led to goals.
On the Second Team, Madden earned her first career selection. She played in all 20 of SU’s matches, tallying three assists and one goal. The sophomore served a prime role as a midfielder and a center back, starting 14 games for the Orange, including the final 11.
Leeggangers was SU’s final selection. She played in all 20 of Syracuse’s games and finished her junior year campaign with three goals and three assists. Two of those assists came in significant wins over top-20 ACC opponents — then-No. 16 Louisville and then-No. 18 California.
