Larry Loudis, a former Syracuse men’s basketball player from 1955-58, died Wednesday, syracuse.com reported. He was 88 years old.
In his four seasons at SU, Loudis was teammates with Jim Brown in 1956 and was on Syracuse’s 1957 NCAA Tournament squad — hailed as one of the program’s greatest teams. Loudis spent his 1954-55 year on SU’s freshman team and began to earn consistent playing time as a sophomore. He played 68 games with the Orange, averaging 10 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in his senior year, in which he was a team captain.
Loudis was a native of Schenectady and attended Mount Pleasant High School before arriving at SU in 1954. He stayed connected with central New York after graduation, becoming a teacher at East Syracuse-Minoa High School. Loudis also coached the high school’s basketball team for seven seasons. He retired from teaching in 1996 but remained in East Syracuse.
According to Loudis’ obituary, he spent many years working in the restaurant business. One of his endeavors included working at Scotch ‘N Sirloin in DeWitt, where everyone referred to him as “Coach.”
