Syracuse football recruiting: Orange adds preferred walk-on QB Tyler Gilfus
Class of 2016 quarterback Tyler Gilfus has joined Syracuse as a preferred walk-on, a Syracuse football spokesman confirmed to The Daily Orange on Friday. Gilfus is now the second quarterback along with Rex Culpepper and the 14th player in the Class of 2016. Both have enrolled early at SU.

Gilfus was initially offered a spot by the Orange’s previous coaching staff and new head coach Dino Babers told him his spot would be honored, per multiple reports.
The Thousand Islands (New York) High School graduate joins rising sophomore Eric Dungey, rising junior Austin Wilson and rising junior walk-on Zack Mahoney at quarterback, along with Culpepper. Rising sophomore Kenterius Womack was recruited as a quarterback, but also played at wide receiver and defensive back last season.
After linebacker Taylor Riggins decommitted three days ago, SU didn’t have any Class of 2016 recruits from New York. At Babers’ introductory press conference, he said he would emphasize recruiting local talent. Now Gilfus, though he’s not being offered a scholarship, at least fits as a player from New York.
According to Syracuse.com, Gilfus’ mother is a professor at SU, so his tuition will be paid for by the school.
