Syracuse University’s Department of Public Safety is investigating a bias incident where an unidentified man reportedly shouted an anti-LGBTQ+ slur at two students, according to a DPS bias incident report from Monday afternoon.

The students reported that a man wearing an orange polo yelled vulgar language and a homophobic slur at them as they were walking near SU’s Barnes Center at The Arch around 1 a.m. Saturday. DPS has not identified the perpetrator or determined whether he is affiliated with SU.

“That kind of language contradicts our University’s goal to be truly welcoming to all,” Craig Stone, DPS chief and associate vice president, wrote in the report. “We are focused on supporting the impacted students and identifying the individual (or individuals) responsible.”

DPS officers are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the perpetrator, according to the report. DPS has asked that anyone with information about the incident contact the department.
