Former Rep. Brandon Williams was named the next undersecretary for nuclear security of the United States Department of Energy by President-elect Donald Trump in an X post Thursday morning.

In his new position, he will be in charge of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile and the U.S. Navy’s nuclear propulsion, syracuse.com reported. Williams will also serve as administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, according to Trump’s post.

Williams, a Republican, lost New York’s 22nd Congressional District election in November to current Democratic Rep. John Mannion after serving one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Williams challenged President Joe Biden’s energy policies over the reliance on fossil fuels while in office and promoted the use of nuclear energy.

A week after Mannion’s victory, The New York Post reported that Williams was a final candidate for labor secretary in Trump’s cabinet. The president-elect has since picked Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer for the position.
